Dryer is Vibrating

Few things are as annoying as the loud rattling and shimmying that happens when your dryer starts vibrating. In some cases it’s a minor issue, easily remedied by leveling the dryer or adjusting the load size. But consistent or violent dryer vibration typically indicates a problem needing repair.

Vibration not only causes irksome noise, but can damage dryer components long term if left unchecked. This troubleshooting guide from Fix4U Repairs will cover what makes dryers vibrate and how to stop it.

What Causes a Dryer to Vibrate?

Dryer vibration usually stems from one of these issues:

  • Uneven Drum Loading: An unbalanced load allows the drum to wobble around, causing bouncing and vibration. Proper loading is key.
  • Leveling Problems: If all four dryer feet don’t sit firmly on the floor, it can rock and vibrate. Adjustable feet should be leveled.
  • Worn Drum Rollers: Over time, the drum support rollers can wear unevenly or seize up, leading to drum wobble and vibration.
  • Damaged Drive Belt: A stretched, damaged, or worn drive belt that slips on the motor pulley creates shaking and vibration.
  • Blower Housing Issues: Dents, damage, blockages, or broken seals around the blower housing contribute to turbulence and vibration.
  • Loose Internal Components: Any components shaken loose can touch each other or the dryer housing causing vibrating and rattling during spinning.
  • Defective Idler Pulley: A failing idler pulley bearing strains the drive belt, resulting in vibration.

Troubleshooting a Vibrating Dryer:

Start your diagnosis by checking the basics:

  • Inspect loading – redistribute garments evenly in drum.
  • Confirm dryer is solidly level – adjust feet to floor if rocking.
  • Listen/look for drum scrapes indicating uneven roller wear.
  • Remove front panel – manually turn rollers, belt, pulleys and motor shaft.
  • Check blower wheel through vent duct for dents or blockages.
  • Tighten any visibly loose interior parts or touch points.

How to Fix a Vibrating Dryer

Once the vibration source is found, repairs are straightforward:

Adjust Dryer Leveling Feet

  1. Place level on top of dryer to find unbalanced side.
  2. Lift front of dryer and turn feet clockwise on low side to raise it.
  3. Set dryer down and confirm no more rocking.

Replace Worn Rollers

  1. Unplug dryer and remove front lower panel.
  2. Support drum and remove clips/retainers on noisy roller ends.
  3. Install new rollers and secure retainers. Spin to test.

Tighten Internal Components

  1. Inspect for any loose or vibrating blower, bracket, motor parts.
  2. Tighten associated mounting screws and clamps.
  3. Use thread locker on any screws securing rotating components.

Replace Drive Belt

  1. Release belt tensioner then remove damaged drive belt from pulleys.
  2. Install new belt, checking tracking in pulleys.
  3. Adjust tensioner until proper tension is achieved.

Preventing Dryer Vibration

Reduce future vibration problems with regular maintenance:

  • Use fabric softener and dryer sheets to reduce static cling and even drum loads.
  • Periodically lubricate dryer rollers and sliding surfaces with lithium grease.
  • Inspect belt, rollers, and pulleys often for signs of wear or damage.
  • Keep dryer vent duct and terminations clear to allow proper air flow.
  • Ensure dryer sits solidly on the floor with no wobbling.
