Common Causes For A Washing Machine Not Spinning

There are a few key reasons why your washing machine isn’t entering the spin cycle:

  • Overloaded drum – This is one of the most common causes. If you overstuff the washer, the drum can become unbalanced. This triggers the washer’s safety mechanisms to prevent spinning. Only wash full but not overloaded loads.
  • Unbalanced load – Similarly, washing single large items like comforters can throw off the balance in the drum. Try redistributing the load to maintain even weight distribution.
  • Lid switch failure – Most washers have a lid switch that prevents the machine from spinning when the lid is open. If this switch malfunctions, the washer may not spin even with the lid closed.
  • Motor or drive system issues – Problems with the motor, belt, or drive shaft can prevent the drum from spinning properly. Worn out parts may need replacement.
  • Broken coupler – The coupler is a component that connects the motor to the transmission. If it cracks or breaks, the motor can’t power the drum to spin.
  • Faulty control board – The control board regulates the washer’s cycles. If it’s defective, it may not allow the machine to proceed to the spin cycle.
  • Bad door lock Some washers will not spin unless the door is fully locked for safety. A faulty door lock switch can also cause this.
  • Clogged drainage system – Drainage issues can prevent your washing machine from spinning out water properly.

Now that you know why your washer won’t spin, let’s talk about how to diagnose and fix the problem.

Step-By-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Follow these steps to pinpoint the issue:

1. Check For An Unbalanced or Overloaded Drum

Make sure you are washing reasonable sized loads that are balanced evenly in the tub. If cramming too much into the drum, take some items out and retry the spin cycle.

Also ensure heavy items are mixed in with lighter items. Washing a single heavy blanket or comforter can sometimes stop the spin.

2. Test The Lid Switch

The lid switch is located inside the top lip of the washer. With the power unplugged, manually press down on the switch while attempting to start a spin cycle.

If the tub begins to spin, you know the lid switch needs replacing. Call Fix4U Repairs and we can replace the faulty switch.

3. Assess The Motor And Drive System

First check that nothing is obstructing the drum from spinning. Open the washer and make sure no objects have become lodged, preventing movement.

Next, inspect the drive belt (typically located on the back of the washer). If the belt is broken or loose, the spin cycle will not engage. The belt will need to be adjusted or replaced.

Check for any grinding noises coming from the motor during the spin cycle. If you hear loud grinding, the bearings inside the motor may be worn out. The motor will need servicing.

4. Examine The Drain System

Many washers will not proceed to the spin cycle until they have pumped out water from the tub.

Make sure the drain hose is properly installed without any clogs or kinks. Drainage issues can prevent the required water removal before spinning.

Running a short drain-only cycle can help clear out any clogs. You may need to clean out the drainage pump filter as well.

5. Test The Control Board

If the motor and drain system check out, the issue may lie with the washer’s control board computer. The control board regulates the spin cycle.

Try rebooting the washer and rerunning the cycle. If it still won’t spin, the control board may need replacement. This is when it helps to call in a repair professional.
